When two of my non-Filipino pals suggested last month to write about the alleged racial slur made against Philippine medical education in the US TV show “Desperate Housewives“, I disinterestedly replied, “Eh, because… ? What for? My blog is about… me.” Narcissism, as Lil aptly put it, “… is the cornerstone of personal blogging and we expect it of you.”
In case you haven’t heard about it, my cat Max has kindly re-enacted the stinky mess that had many Filipinos in a pissy tizzy. I’m sorry, Max sometimes channels his inner pussyness through potty humour. He also said to vote for him?
Before y’all mutter that I’ve arrived rather late to a stale controversy, let me explain that this entry, like all my other entries, is really about… me.
After that DH episode aired, tae (Filipino word for shit) immediately hit the fan, but the stinker was flushed away when ABC issued an apology for the lame throwaway line. Everything has already been said and written about it. Even the Philippine government got involved. Heck, over 126,000 people have signed this online petition.
I have nothing new to say. Nothing much. But since my pals were asking why my blog has been snoozing, I thought I should pick up their thrown gauntlet. You wanted an answer? You… got it. Since placing 7th in Ma’am Janette Toral’s Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs of 2007 writing project / contest, I wanted to disengage from blogging and disappear. It was time well spent. Then someone I know plunked US $5.00 fee to enter my blog in the 10th Philippine Web Awards to rally me back to blogging? I’ve known about it for over 2 months, but I just decided to blog about it… now. The PWA aims to honour “… the best Filipino-made sites, their designers and developers.” Ehrr, I’m NOT dissing the finalists, but use of the word best… cracks me up. That’s… best among those who paid the fee. But, thanks.
Then would you believe the panel of judges pushed me through to the Top 10 (Blogs) Semi-finalists round? Alas, the judges likely were not impressed with my one post each in September and October, bwahaha! I didn’t place in the Top 5 Finalists, but the ride isn’t over. I qualified for People’s Choice Awards (Top 10 Blogs), so I have 1 in 10 chances of winning, hmm? Please register and vote for me? Deadline is November 22, 2007 midnight (Manila time, I guess). Uh, my milk money is on Noemi’s Touched by an Angel (Best Blog) which won in 2006 and Abe’s YugaTech (People’s Choice Best Blog).
Alrighty, let’s wrap this up… eh? When I first saw the following (extended) video clip of the DH episode, my reaction was not… “racial slur!” I actually thought, “Hey, that’s Nathan Fillion as Dr. Mayfair!” Nathan Fillion played the role of Captain Mal Reynolds in the cancelled TV show Firefly and the movie Serenity… which incidentally inspired the name of my blog. Clear?
Nope, I’m not going to apologize for being a big geek. Mr. 099836,5,4112.
(I don’t watch Desperate Housewives, not even for you, Mr. Fillion.)
Lastly, thanks very much to Jim Caro for plugging my nomination.
Adieu,
fruity crap
P.S. I just helped my Dad install a shiny new toilet today. So blog-worthy, isn’t it?
It’s partially the source of inspiration for this entry. You know where the toilet base meets the drain hole in the floor? When we lifted the old toilet… oh, horror. The crap in the hole… was 32 kinds of nasty. (Max says that even if he doesn’t win, I’ll always have a new throne to sit on.)
