Desperate Housecats & 10th Philippine Web Awards Voting

VOTE by Nov. 22, 2007 for fruityoaty in 10th PWA (People's Choice: Blogs category)!

When two of my non-Filipino pals suggested last month to write about the alleged racial slur made against Philippine medical education in the US TV show Desperate Housewives, I disinterestedly replied, "Eh, because... ? What for? My blog is about... me." Narcissism, as one commenter so aptly put it, "... is the cornerstone of personal blogging and we expect it of you." In case you haven't heard about it, my cat Max has kindly re-enacted the stinky mess that had many Filipinos in a pissy tizzy. I'm sorry, Max sometimes channels his inner pussyness through potty humour. He also said to vote for him?

Before y'all mutter that I've arrived rather late to a stale controversy, let me explain that this entry, like all my other entries, is really about... me. Uh-huh. After that DH episode aired, tae (Filipino word for shit) immediately hit the fan, but the stinker was flushed away when ABC issued an apology for the lame throwaway line. Everything has already been said and written about it. Even the Philippine government got involved. Heck, over 126,000 people have signed this online petition.

I have nothing new to say. Nothing much. But since my pals were asking why my blog has been snoozing, I thought I should pick up their thrown gauntlet. You wanted an answer? You... got it. Since placing 7th in Ma'am Janette Toral's Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs of 2007 writing project / contest, I wanted to disengage from blogging and disappear. It was time well spent. Then someone I know plunked USD $5.00 fee to enter my blog in the 10th Philippine Web Awards to rally me back to blogging? I've known about it for over 2 months, but I just decided to blog about it... now. The PWA aims to honour "... the best Filipino-made sites, their designers and developers." Ehrm, I'm NOT dissing the finalists, but usage of the word "best"... cracks me up. That's... best among those who paid the fee. But, umm... thanks.

VOTE by Nov. 22, 2007 for fruityoaty in 10th PWA (People's Choice: Blogs category)!

Then would you believe the panel of judges pushed me through to the Top 10 (Blogs) Semi-finalists round? Alas, the judges likely were not impressed with my one post each in September and October, bwahaha! I didn't place in the Top 5 Finalists, but the ride isn't over. I qualified for People's Choice Awards (Top 10 Blogs), so I have 1 in 10 chances of winning, hmm? Please register and vote for me? Deadline is November 22, 2007 midnight (Manila time, I guess). Uh, my milk money is on Noemi's Touched by an Angel (Best Blog) which won in 2006 and Abe's YugaTech (People's Choice Best Blog).

Alrighty, let's wrap this up... eh? When I first saw the following (extended) video clip of the DH episode, my reaction was not... "racial slur!" I actually thought, "Hey, that's Nathan Fillion as Dr. Mayfair!" Nathan Fillion played the role of Captain Mal Reynolds in the cancelled TV show Firefly and the movie Serenity... which incidentally inspired the name of my blog. Clear?

Nope, I'm not going to apologize for being a big geek. Mr. 099836,5,4112.

(I don't watch Desperate Housewives, not even for you, Mr. Fillion.)

Lastly, thanks very much to Jim Caro for plugging my nomination. :)

Adieu,
fruity crap

P.S. I just helped my Dad install a shiny new toilet today. So blog-worthy, isn't it? It's partially the source of inspiration for this entry. You know where the toilet base meets the drain hole in the floor? When we lifted the old toilet... oh, horror. The crap in the hole... was 32 kinds of nasty. (Max says that even if he doesn't win, I'll always have a new royal throne to sit on.)

Hi Massa P. Long time no speak! I have to take my hat off to you for this post. Brilliant.

I bought my first home! I wanted to share. It is the smallest bungalow duplex in Toronto, but it is all mine. Soon. I move the end of August. I started a blog to store my new home thoughts. I am still blogging at 21st Century Girl, but I knit and stuff in cooler weather!

Hope you are well. Your Twitter comment was intriguing!

    Ok… you get my vote.

All the best and you have a great sense of humour!

Nasty toilet… Are you now sitting in glory? :o

First of all, congratulations on making it into the Semi-finals! :)

I don't watch DH myself so I completely missed the whole fuss that was made over this. I'm kind of surprised so many people did get pissy over it. I can't even begin to name every Japanese anime series that has made some sort of slur on Americans or American culture. A lot of them are shows I like, I certainly don't get pissy over it. Just shrug it off, laugh, and move on that's what I think.

You know, the world is just too crazy about being PC and not offending people and issuing apologies that aren't even met. The world would be a much funner place if we could all just make fun of each other again and no one be allowed to go sissypants about it.

Hey fruity… I am having the best time of my life in the land of mangoes… and Pinoy twinks. ;)

    Sending you kisses!

I never understood the purpose of blog awards. Really, we celebrate people who talk about themselves or possibly a couple of "important things" every once in a while? Oh well.

As far as the DH stuff, I find it funny that white people and Americans can get joked about all day, but it's wrong to offend other ethnicities. Equity I say.

Your blog deserves to win. Your entries are always so fun. Good luck! I myself don't watch Desperate Housewives. I do know that as Canadians we hear a lot of untrue things about us on TV as well, but I don't recall anyone ever doing anything about it.

  9. 9 Tina (angelblush.blogspot.com) (comments: 31)

Yay! I'm voting for you then! I like the comic skit. Haha. :)

  11. 11 Tiffy (comments: 1)

    Lol. Good luck.

  12. 12 Joyfulchicken (comments: 17)

Haha! That Desperate Housecats thing made my day. I'm still laughing at pussy doctor and vet school.

  13. 13 Ann (comments: 44)

    Whedon geek… figures… (kidding), lol.

But you know what? It seemed like it was a bigger deal in the blogging community than in the actual medical community (or at least the bit that I'm exposed to). I only heard 1 doctor and 3 classmates make snarky one-liners about it. Maybe it's 'cause not a lot of us still watch DH. :p

Good luck on the web awards. I love your blog enough to register and vote (and I hate registering, lol).

  14. 14 fruity (comments: 78)

    @Kaitlin: Thanks for voting! Hugs!

@Paolo: Weird, eh? Well, thanks for the vote!

@Culture Shiok!: Bwahaha, lynch mob = more traffic?!

@Rad: Actually, the cast of Buffy would sidetrack me, LOL.

@Zerovoltage: Lame throwaway line, yup. Blame scriptwriters.

@Evilgenius: Vote or die. JUST KIDDING! Thanks!

@Lil: Firefly was awesome, check it out. And geeks rule!

@Juice: My readers are… wonderful and strange. ;) Thanks!

@Jim: I got an invite to awards show and party, but I can't go. :(

@Jude: Vote or die. No, I won't disappear. Firefly lives!

  15. 15 Kaitlin (comments: 36)

Good luck, fruity! I'll vote for ya.

  16. 16 Paolo (formerly of paolomendoza.com) (comments: 16)

Bwahahahaha… I like the idea of you posting once a month and still winning. That's why I'm gonna vote for you! Lolz!

  17. 17 Culture Shiok! (formerly of www.cultureshiok.com) (comments: 33)

Now you don't want members of the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) protesting this time, do you?

  18. 18 Rad (formerly of geekarooni.com) (comments: 10)

I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought my Google Reader's screwed. Am I actually seeing 2 consecutive posts?! Haha, kidding aside, it is nice to read new entries. Regardless of how over the DH thing is, it's nice to read your side of that drama because now I know I can sidetrack you by placing a life size cardboard picture of Nathan Fillion for you to stare at while I steal your wallet

    Off to vote now.

  19. 19 Zerovoltage (comments: 34)

Max the Fat Cat, racial slurs and tae. You can't go wrong, lol.

I too wasn't that offended, though it did make me cringe when I heard what she said.

  20. 20 Evilgenius (comments: 76)

Don't really get it — but that could be because I don't follow DH.

Now… where's that button to click so I can vote…

  21. 21 Lil (comments: 24)

Thank you kindly for the mention. That is one crazy comic. Perhaps you should start future blog entries with Desperate Housecats? This 'racial slur' sounds a little like political correctness gone mad, but I suppose it can't be helped. I wouldn't personally mind if light jokes were made about my heritage or the places I've lived — most people know better anyway!

I loved the movie Serenity and am interested in watching the series at some point. So you're very right in not apologising for being a geek since it's downright awesome to be one.

Wonderful news about your toilet. Does your dad want to come round and check my one out? It's been broken for weeks. Thank God we have three toilets in our house.

  22. 22 Juice (comments: 24)

It's amazing how you still get to be nominated for blog awards like this even though you don't blog. You're still a celebrity blogger!! Haha, but we can't blame anyone really, your posts are just so contagiously good to read!! Haha! :P

Ahh, the DH episode: it has gone down the drain, LOL.

Good luck in the awards and I hope you win!!

  23. 23 Jim (comments: 40)

:) As they say here Down Under… no worries! So, will there be a big party if you get it?! Hehehe, wouldn't be possible to have a get together…

  24. 24 Jude (comments: 57)

The comic needs more bite. And Firefly is dead.

If I vote for you and you win, will you disappear again?

    SLACKER.

    Mr. 099836,5,4112
