Part 1: Food Blog (Eh?) and Shutdown Day - Eat, Sleep, Think

Happy 18th Birthday Black Forest cake for Stephanie

Several days ago, my friend sent me this link to a list of over 100 Pinoy foodies… food blogs, really (127, at the time) which included… my blog? After Jude’s chuckles over the notion of fruityoaty being a food blog (uh-huh), he suggested that I might as well cave in to the masses and start writing only about food from now on. “Get real,” I replied. Anyway, two Saturdays ago, I went to my next-door neighbour’s daughter’s birthday party held at their house. My family was a no-show, except for me & moi.

[ EDIT: Right after posting this entry, my blog disappeared from that list. Boo hoo. Hello Stef. I'm not ungrateful. I AM a foodie who uses food as a... metaphor which is why my friend was teasing me. ;) Yes Jude, normal people don't get my sense of humour. Then Stef left a comment asking if I wanted it back on the list. Jude, is it a food blog? Yes, OK... it is now. ]

Instead of a cotillion (an ostentatious “coming of age” shindig for Filipino girls on their 18th birthday, staged with all the splendor of a wedding), the girl opted for a car when she gets her license. Smart girl? Smart parents? Spending from CDN $10K to $30K (depends) on one party is a bit… Well, it hardly teaches a young woman to be a financially responsible adult, hmm?

That Saturday was on Shutdown Day (an experiment to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day). I mostly ate, slept and thought about stuff. So yeah, a day very much like most of my other waking hours… except that dinner party had the potential to be my Last Supper. It was a very “meat-heavy” menu. On/off vegetarian, remember?

Perhaps seeing this “Last Supper” wall thingy hanging near their banquet table… was a sign of things to come. You know, the transmogrification of bread and wine to Christ’s flesh and blood? As Roman Catholics, we’re all supposed to believe that the transfiguration is real… not just symbolic. Like, slightly vampiric. So technically, there’s no such thing as a vegan or vegetarian Roman Catholic. That joke sounded funnier in my head.

Jesus and the Last Supper

I imagine, if I ever strictly did a food blog, I’d follow the ways of one of my favourite food memoir authors and food show hosts, Anthony Bourdain who gained popularity for exposing the quirkier, darker “sex, drugs, rock & roll” underbelly of the culinary world. He is infamous for consuming ant eggs, a raw seal eyeball, sheep testicles, a whole cobra and a warthog anus… all during his food travels, and claims to be disgusted by a Chicken McNugget. Of course, I’m neither crazy nor drunk enough to partake of such… nummy treats. What I’m really saying is that I consider myself adventurous when it comes to food and would never ever care enough to avoid upsetting anyone’s stomache or senses. But if I didn’t care, that’d get me in trouble and no one would want to read my blog. See, food blog? Scrap that plan.

If you really want to read Pinoy food blogs, hop over to Market Manila which won the 2007 PBA Bloggers’ Choice Award and… Dessert Comes First which won the 2007 PBA Deliblog Award (Deli = Delicious… of course, it could also mean Delinquent or Delirious… in which case, I would’ve totally snatched that award easily. Go ASK THEM for recipes. Also, congrats to Shari aka “Misteryosa” for winning the Personal Blog category. Impressive.

(My friend commented that the Blogirl Award category brought up visions of Sugar Plum Fairies and Blowjobs… Never mind. Dude, Blogirl = Blog Girl.)

Anyway, I was going to include photos of the party food, but they would have made this post too looong. The “less is more and brevity hallelujah” mob would lynch me again with their hateration e-mails, therefore I have broken up this post into 2 parts. Be sure to return in 3 weeks if you want to see Part Deux. But fair warning: some of the food looks very yummy and some… not so much… but, nothing too upsetting. Except… ehrr…

So, is this my blog’s swan song? Well, maybe if the swan was marinated in 5 secret herbs and spices.. and stuffed in a warthog’s anus, it would be. Is this the end of fruityoaty or have I heard the cries of the legions (haha) of fans? Will my blog sing again to the tune of Dionne Warwick? Sing with me… “The moment I wake up; Before I put on my makeup; I say a little prayer for you… Forever, and ever, you’ll stay in my heart…” Whatever.

Blog focus re-tooling. Next idea to debate - software testing sideblog. And something called “blog transparency, to be or not be?” Transparency = no cryptic babble. Also, less private entries for registered fruitees. Zzzz. Gah.

Oh yeah… that cake. Black Forest gà¢teau. Sinfully moist chocolate cake layered with whipped cream and cherries? Some more, please. Nummy.

Adieu,

That cake looks so good! Hehe!

I don’t know if I’ll ever be a vegetarian; I love meat so much (not necessarily pork and beef). Seafood is my food Kryptonite!

I like Anthony Bourdain too! I never miss his show “No Reservations” on the travel and living channel. He hates Rachael Ray so much! Hahaha!

Where’s Part Deux? Where are the food pics? It’s been more than 3 weeks since Apr. 4, 2007 7:11 PM…

Of course, this IS a food blog. That’s what I come back here for. Or think about when I read fruityoaty.

Thanks for the link on 128 Pinoy foodies. Interesting.

I’m back! Yey! What did I miss?! I’d like to greet you a Happy Easter btw.

Are you sure you want this to become a food blog? If you will then I’d like to see some hybrid adobo dishes. :) Tee-hee, tc!

Oooo… I want some cake. So it’s a food blog now eh? That’s cool. You do talk about food a lot on your blog, with all those yummy pictures to go with it. Lol.
