The Breakfast Club: Waffling Through Life

My sister's buttermilk waffles drizzled w/ chocolate syrup and dusted w/ icing sugar

This past Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday - also known as Pancake Day, Pancake Tuesday, Paczki Day, Fasnacht Day, Fauschnaut Day, Mardis Gras and Fat Tuesday. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday. So, why a photo of waffles, you ask? Because my sister made her super-crisp yet moist and scrumptious Classic Buttermilk Waffles (recipe from The Breakfast Book by Marion Cunningham). Throw out those frozen cardboards from the grocery store that you pop into the toaster. Make your own! Best. Waffles. Ever.

Pancake batter is similar to waffle batter, but whereas a pancake is flat, soft and fluffy, the wonderful waffle is crispy, light and requires a waffle iron. I like how the waffle iron creates those patterned crevices… perfect for catching syrup, jam, melted butter, whatever. My sister always makes a huge batch as Cunningham’s waffles freeze quite well, but they never last for long in Casa da fruity, hehe. Just pop ‘em in the toaster. Classic.

Pictured above is my breakfast on Tuesday: 2 yummy waffles drizzled with chocolate syrup and lightly dusted with icing sugar. The one below is my dinner dessert last night: 2 waffles doused with boozy bananas in caramel sauce. Like I said before, these waffles don’t last very long. I quickly made a caramel sauce with store-bought pancake syrup, butter, brown sugar, evaporated milk, Appleton Estate V/X Jamaica Rum, Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, and then folded in some sliced bananas into the warm sauce. Oh relax, “boozy” is a misnomer because the alcohol evaporates during the cooking process - only the mellow flavour remains. DAMN, IT WAS FINE! I should’ve had these on FAT Tuesday… with whipped cream. Kidding!

Well, on a different note (or is it?), I was thinking about what to give up for Lent earlier, however, I always fail at sticking to my Lent promises. I’d be lying to myself if I said that I’m a good, devout, practicing Catholic. Nevertheless, I’ve decided to give up APATHY, but I feel too apathetic to start. (Now, there’s a conundrum for ya.) Also, I’ve been in a rut for what seems like an eternity. I need A change. I need TO change. Now. Fast.

I can recall an old e-mail from a friend who wrote that attitude, not circumstance is often the best predictor for happiness. Today, I had a brief MSN chat with a friend who just celebrated her birthday yesterday. When I asked her if she felt any different about being 1 year older, she replied, “I prepare for the aging think in advance… I start thinking about being a year older like 6 months in advance.” Attitude and preparation… simple truths, yes… but I’ve forgotten to apply them to myself, lately. For example, one could wake up in the morning and say, “I’m going to prepare some waffles today and they’re going to be super-fine!” Uh-huh.

Anyway, who knew that there were so many definitions for waffling? (Actually, I did know…) Well, here are 4 definitions, in particular:

  • The act of making a scrumptious waffle. (Oh, ya know ya want it.)
  • Talking around the point, blathering, filling in time, or boring talk ;)
  • The inability to decide on something. Breakfast waffles have grooves that go up and down, like some people’s opinions.
  • A back-and-forth wing motion made by water birds such as ducks right before landing in order to lose air from under their wings. ( I do this all the time! I just gotta stop with the funky chicken ducky dance. )

So many raisins, so many waffles, so many chocolates, so very little time.

Adieu,

fruity bananas

    UH… OOOHHH!!! *DROOLS*
I need to get to know fruity’s sister!!!
Maybe then she’d FedEx us some of those sweet - looking - fruity - approved desserts. *Nudge* *Nudge*
I think the possibility of that happening is greater than fruity’s BBQ party… hahaha!

This entry was a super-crispy, super-fine platter of super-fruity, aged cheddar cheese and deep-bodied WINE whine.

And whoah, look at them waffles! I want 2… no, make that 4! With super-boozy banana caramel sauce, super-please.

    Cheer up. You’ll be super-OK. OK? :D

Damn those waffles look good, especially the first picture. When it comes to waffles I like to have them the classic way though, butter and syrup XD though chocolate and powder sugar is sometimes good, or just powder sugar.

Hmm, I only knew of the first three definitions for waffling. I learned something new today!

Those waffles do look rather nice. ;)

My local pub sells puddings of home made waffles with toffee banana and ice cream, it’s rather moreish. :)

I’ll be so happy if this could be my breakfast today. But I can’t , I have a packet of oatmeal. A little bit of water and that’s my breakfast.

    Those waffles look soooo good.

Too bad I am majorly cuisine challenged.

Your site is really not good for my diet. But I must come back because you entertain me!

OMG, fruity, those waffle looks so good!

(Your site should have a disclaimer: do not browse if you are going on a diet!)

I’m a sucker for waffles and pancakes. I could have ‘em every day.

I remember that one time we went to Florida and stayed in a hotel with free continental breakfast. I had waffles for breakfast for one whole week!

Those waffles look scrumptious, but I also really like what you said about attitude and circumstances. So very true.

Are you serious? Are they really home-made from scratch waffles?! THEY LOOK INCREDIBLE. Ah my mouth is like watering. I hate coming here! I always leave feeling so hungry! Hahaha.

    Happy Fat Tuesday.

Wow those waffles do look amazing. Must go make some now. I think I might add bananas and chocolate to the same batch, though. Best of both worlds.

Your blog is dangerous, I always get hungry when I read it. The funny thing is that I was talking about waffles with my mom earlier today and got a recipe so I’m planning to make waffles very soon!

You are really killing me with these photos of food. ACK! *lol* The desert waffles look the yummiest to me. I love waffles with bananas, and it’s too bad that I developed a later allergy to bananas. :( I hope you enjoyed them!

  17. 17 Erika (2 comments) Feb 24th, 2007 at 11:26 am

I feel like eating some waffles now. They look scrumptious!! =]

  18. 18 Mitsuru (16 comments) Feb 24th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

The pictures of your waffles are a feast for the eyes and by just looking at them, busog na agad ako, burp!

How’s that for a new way to lose some weight?

I still prefer pancakes over waffles though, call me sentimental but we only had pancakes then when I was growing up in the Philippines and that was a long, long time ago.

Speaking of birthdays I’ll be turning a new leaf in my life in two months time. I actually stopped celebrating birthdays. I go by living each day like it’s my birthday. Ha-ha. I live my life one day at a time. No expectations, just go with the flow and roll with the punches.

    Can I drool?

    No? Too bad.

Anyway, the waffles in those pics look tastylicious. I don’t even remember if I’ve ever eaten them. Uhm, yeah. I know. I’m a loser.

I used to be a devout Catholic. And I mean devout. If I were 7 years old, I’d probably have a blog somewhere talking about church, Bible studies, etc.

But I’ve changed since then - drastically.

    So, can I drool now?

    Yes? Thanks! :D

    *drrrroooooooooooollllllllsssssssss*

Those photos are yummy… Suddenly I’m craving pancakes.

Off topic: you should watch Death Note! I totally recommend this one. It’s not funny but very mind twisting, especially in the middle part of this series.

Those waffles look great! We don’t have a waffle iron - might need to get one. And a bread maker too, I’ve been thinking it will be really good to make bread (the lazy way!).

  27. 27 Superstealthy (5 comments) Feb 25th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

OH MY FREAKIN’ GOSH!! Those waffles look absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS!!! I really really really want some… I was going to have some waffles today for brunch but didn’t want to make any. You lucky duck you. Lol, maybe for Lent you should give up the waffles and give ‘em to me? :P jk

  28. 28 Julie (15 comments) Feb 25th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Wow, the pictures look restaurant-quality. Your sis must be a great cook hehe.

  29. 29 Irina (6 comments) Feb 26th, 2007 at 12:08 am

    I need fooooooooooood.
Waffles, over here, we are not used to them… more to hotcakes, basically the same, hehe.
Anyway, good luck with everything! (:

Ah, I haven’t read your blog post yet, but it does look quite delicious. I’m bookmarking your page since it looks awesome.

Mmm, those waffles do look good. It makes me want to try my hand at making some snazzy ones like these, but I need a waffle iron first. :)

  32. 32 Jim (35 comments) Feb 26th, 2007 at 11:42 am

 I was just smiling and drooling at the same time while reading this entry. I love it with ice cream! But make good on your Lenten promise! And celebrate with a bang of raisin, banana-coated waffles… yum, yum! (Is the combination, OK??? Oh swell, I’ll try it tomorrow!)

    Cheers!

  33. 33 Anna (anna.boscardin.org) (10 comments) Feb 26th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Now I want waffles. Lol. Everything looks so good. Lent? I gave up junk food. I’m drawn to Burger King like people are drawn to shopping, so I gave up junk food. I should have given up Starbucks, but then I might have just died. Lol.

  34. 34 Alyssa (2 comments) Feb 26th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

I was brought up Catholic so I always got the ashes on my head.

I am missing my period for two weeks now and I have been craving for food like crazy. Reading your entries just makes me hungry all the time EVEN MORE.

The waffles just look heavenly. Mind sharing the recipe? :-)

  36. 36 Lexie (16 comments) Feb 27th, 2007 at 2:35 am

Now I deeply regret not replacing the waffle iron when I (accidentally) destroyed it. ):

Yummy. Delicious. Okay. I’m drooling. Eugh.
